Recognize and Reward Your Team

Recognize and Reward Your Team

You’ll probably feel very good about being the manager and coach of a productive
and successful team. All along, you will be giving your team feedback and pats on
the back. What else can you do? Some suggestions are listed below:

Celebrate and appreciate

You can put letters in the employees’ files; publicize good teamwork in
your newsletter; let the team members’ families know that the property
values their contribution. You can arrange a meeting with upper
management at which team members talk about their work and the team is
recognized for its accomplishments.

Share social activities

The team gets a boost through shared social activity, too. You can sponsor a
team dinner, celebrate birthdays, or provide tickets to a special event.
Encourage informal get-together.
Avoid destructive competition
Some competitions pit employees against each other; this type of competition
hurts the team spirit. Don’t single out individual team members for
recognition. Your purpose is to recognize and reward the team.

Provide career development

Many companies now take a look at team contributions when they decide on
promotions. Performance appraisals include an evaluation of employees’
participation in teams. If team members learn new skills (cross-training),
they get more pay.
In some organizations, an employee review committee evaluates fellow team
members as part of the performance appraisal process. One company’s
employee board looks at what various teams are doing and presents awards for
team accomplishments.
